Performance Pipe Timeline

For more than 50 years, HDPE has played a prominent role in the pipe industry. Below are a few highlights of Performance Pipe's history.

  • In 1951 HDPE resin was invented.  The butt fusion joining method for PE pipe was developed in 1955, and in 1959 the first PE gas distribution system was installed in Caney, KS.
  • In the 60's, the Brownwood and Pryor plants opened.  HDPE pipe for oil patch and water service tubing was introduced.  Driscopipe® 7000 piping products for gas disbution were also introduced. The first sidewall fusion tapping tee was developed.
  • In the 70's, four more plants were opened: Knoxille, Bloomfield, Fairfield, and Startex.  We are the first to produce 48" pipe.
  • The 80's was the first time HDPE pipe recieved FM approval.  The Reno plant opened in 1986.  We are the first to co-extrude stipped pipe, first to coil 4" and 6" HDPE pipe, and first to produce 54" pipe.
  • In the 90's we developed the PE MJ Adapter and were the first to produce bimodal PE100 resin. The Hagerstown plant opened in1996. DIPS pipes for water distribution were developed in 1998.
  • In 2000 Phillips' Discopipe and Chevron's PLEXCO combined to form Performance Pipe.  We expanded the Reno and Pryor plants.
